From well planning to completion
An introduction to the stages of well construction.
Learn how a well moves from geological assessment and site preparation to drilling, casing, cementing, evaluation and completion. Review the main equipment and material families used at each stage.
Stages of well construction
Planning, drilling, casing and cementing, evaluation and completion.
Study and design
Geological and seismic information guide the location and target. The operator defines depth, trajectory, anticipated formation pressures, casing design and the drilling-fluid programme. Equipment selection follows this approved design.
Prepare and mobilise
The site is prepared for access, foundations, utilities, storage and waste handling. The rig and service equipment are mobilised, assembled and inspected before drilling starts.
Drill and circulate
The bit cuts rock while drilling fluid carries cuttings to the surface. Fluid properties, solids control and well-control systems support the drilling operation.
Install casing and cement
At planned stages, casing is installed and cement is placed around it to support the tubulars and isolate formations. Drilling, casing and cementing continue in sections toward the target.
Evaluate and complete
Measurements and testing inform whether the well should be completed for production. Depending on the design, completion uses tubing, packers and wellhead equipment. Other outcomes may include suspension or abandonment.
This guide describes the process at a commercial level. The operator and drilling contractor establish the engineering and operating programme.
Drilling materials and equipment
What each stage needs: product families for drilling and well construction.
Technical and safety data, batch records and analysis certificates support purchasing decisions. See the product groups on our Oil & Gas page.
Rig and drilling tools
Rig systems and spares; drill pipe, drill collars and heavy-weight drill pipe; PDC or roller-cone bits selected for the formation. Mud pumps, tanks, shakers and screens support fluid circulation and solids removal.
Fluids and cement
Suitable fluid systems may use bentonite, barite, polymers and selected additives. Completion brines and oilwell cement are specified for the application. Technical and safety data, batch records and analysis certificates support purchasing decisions.
Tubulars and well equipment
Casing, tubing, connections, valves, flanges, wellheads and pumps are defined by dimensions, grade, pressure rating, temperature and service conditions. Well-control equipment follows the approved programme.
